In short
Lines fall into three groups. Dynamic lines appear only on movement and respond to botulinum toxin. Static lines are visible at rest and usually need volume or resurfacing. Fine crepey texture is a skin-quality problem. Treating the wrong category is the usual reason results disappoint.
What causes it
- Dynamic lines
- Formed by repeated muscle movement — frowning, smiling, raising the brows. Visible when you move, absent at rest. These are what botulinum toxin treats well.
- Static lines
- Etched into the skin and visible even when the face is completely still. They develop when dynamic lines are reinforced over years, compounded by collagen loss. Toxin softens them over time but rarely erases them.
- Fine crepey texture
- Not really lines at all, but thin, dehydrated skin with reduced elastin. Common around the eyes and on the cheeks. Needs skin-quality treatment rather than muscle relaxation or volume.
- Volume-related folds
- Nasolabial folds and marionette lines are often read as wrinkles but are caused by descent and lost support above them. Treating the fold directly is frequently less effective than restoring what is missing higher up.
How to tell which you have
There is a simple test. Look in a mirror with your face completely relaxed. Lines you can still see are static. Lines that appear only when you frown or smile are dynamic. Areas that look finely wrinkled like tissue paper when you gently stretch the skin are texture.
Most people over forty have a combination, which is why a single treatment rarely addresses everything and why a staged plan makes more sense than one large appointment.
The order usually matters: relaxing movement stops dynamic lines deepening further, while skin quality and volume are addressed alongside. Doing everything simultaneously makes it impossible to tell what worked.
Treatment options
Which of these is appropriate depends on your assessment. Each links to the full detail for that treatment.
Botulinum toxin
The only category that treats dynamic lines. Conservative dosing keeps proportionate movement rather than eliminating it.
Profhilo
Bio-remodelling hyaluronic acid for crepey, dehydrated skin and early laxity — the texture problem rather than the movement one.
Rejuran
Polynucleotide treatment supporting repair, elasticity and resilience where fine texture is the concern.
Dermal fillers
For folds caused by lost structure, where restoring support above the fold achieves more than filling the line itself.
What treatment cannot do
- Deep static lines soften but rarely disappear without resurfacing or surgery
- No treatment stops ageing — these manage how it presents
- Toxin does not improve skin quality, and skin-quality treatments do not stop muscle movement
- Results from collagen-based treatments take three to six months, so judging them at six weeks is misleading
Frequently asked questions
- Will Botox get rid of my forehead lines completely?
- If they are dynamic, yes, substantially. If they are visible when your face is completely relaxed, they are static and toxin will soften them over time but not erase them. That usually needs an additional approach.
- What is the difference between Botox and filler for wrinkles?
- Toxin reduces the muscle movement that creates lines. Filler replaces lost volume and structure. They solve different problems, and using one where the other is needed is the most common reason results disappoint.
- At what age should I start treatment?
- There is no correct age. What matters is what you actually have — treating dynamic lines earlier prevents them becoming static, but treating a face that does not need it is not preventative, it is unnecessary.
- Can anything help crepey skin under the eyes?
- Yes, but it is a skin-quality problem rather than a line problem, so it needs treatments that improve thickness and elasticity rather than filler or toxin.
