In short
Pore size is largely genetic and cannot be permanently reduced. What can change is how visible pores are: congestion, oil, sun damage and loss of skin firmness all make them look larger. Treating those improves appearance meaningfully. Any promise to shrink pores permanently is overselling.
What causes it
- Genetics and oil production
- Pore size is largely inherited and linked to sebaceous activity. Oilier skin has more visible pores, and no treatment changes that baseline permanently.
- Congestion
- Pores filled with oil and dead cells appear considerably larger. Clearing congestion produces one of the quickest visible improvements available.
- Loss of firmness
- As collagen declines, skin around each pore loses support and pores appear stretched and more obvious. This is why pores often look larger with age.
- Sun damage
- UV degrades the collagen supporting pore walls and thickens the surface, making texture rougher and pores more prominent.
What can honestly be achieved
Pores cannot be closed — they have no muscle and do not open and shut. What treatment does is reduce congestion, improve surface turnover and increase the firmness of the skin around each pore, all of which make pores less noticeable.
That is a real and visible improvement, and it is worth doing. It is just not the same as the permanent pore reduction some marketing implies.
Texture improves on a similar basis: smoother turnover and better collagen support produce skin that reflects light more evenly, which is what reads as refined.
Treatment options
Which of these is appropriate depends on your assessment. Each links to the full detail for that treatment.
Rejuran
Polynucleotide treatment improving texture, elasticity and the firmness of skin around pores over a course of sessions.
Medical-grade peels
Accelerates surface turnover and clears congestion, with depth chosen against your skin type to avoid post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Mesotherapy
Supports skin quality and radiance alongside texture-focused treatment.
What treatment cannot do
- Pore size cannot be permanently reduced — visibility is what changes
- Results need maintenance, since oil production and turnover continue
- Aggressive treatment on deeper skin tones risks pigmentation that is worse than the original texture concern
- Improvement is gradual across a course, not immediate
Frequently asked questions
- Can pores be permanently shrunk?
- No. Pore size is largely genetic and pores have no mechanism to open or close. Treatment reduces how visible they are by clearing congestion and improving the firmness of surrounding skin, which is a genuine but different outcome.
- Why do my pores look bigger than they used to?
- Collagen decline reduces the support around each pore, so they appear stretched. Sun damage accelerates this, and congestion makes it more obvious.
- Does exfoliating more help?
- Up to a point, then it reverses. Over-exfoliation damages the barrier, which causes irritation, dullness and often more oil production. Frequency matters more than strength.
