In short
Pigmentation has several distinct causes and they respond differently. Melasma is hormonally driven, recurs, and is managed rather than cured. Sun-induced spots and post-inflammatory marks respond better. Daily sun protection does more than any in-clinic treatment, and aggressive treatment on deeper skin tones can worsen pigment.
What causes it
- Melasma
- Symmetrical patches, usually on the cheeks, forehead or upper lip. Driven by hormones and heat as well as UV, which is why pregnancy, the contraceptive pill and Dubai's climate all aggravate it. It is a chronic condition: it is controlled, not cured.
- Sun-induced pigmentation
- Discrete spots and freckling from cumulative UV exposure. Generally the most responsive to treatment, and the most preventable.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Marks left after acne, injury or an over-aggressive treatment. More common and more persistent in mid-to-deeper skin tones. It fades with time and correct treatment, but is easily made worse.
- Other causes
- Some medications, thyroid dysfunction and certain skin conditions cause pigment change. This is part of why assessment comes before treatment rather than after.
Why pigmentation is harder to treat in Dubai
Two factors make this market different. UV is intense year-round, so there is no low-exposure season in which skin can recover. And the population here includes a high proportion of mid-to-deeper skin tones, which carry a genuinely higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from aggressive treatment.
The practical consequence is that the strongest available treatment is frequently the wrong choice. An aggressive peel or device setting that suits fair, sun-deprived skin can leave deeper skin more pigmented than it started — and that rebound pigment is harder to treat than the original problem.
Slower and more conservative genuinely produces better outcomes here. Any clinic offering a single dramatic session for pigmentation is describing a risk, not a result.
Sun protection is the treatment, not the aftercare
This is the part patients most often skip and it is the part that decides the outcome. Without daily, properly applied broad-spectrum protection, pigmentation returns — and every in-clinic session is spent undoing new damage rather than making progress.
Heat matters too, particularly for melasma, which is aggravated by infrared and visible light, not only UV. In a climate like Dubai's that makes shade, timing and reapplication as relevant as the SPF number on the bottle.
If you are not willing to commit to daily protection, it is more honest to say so at consultation than to spend money on treatments that will be undone.
Treatment options
Which of these is appropriate depends on your assessment. Each links to the full detail for that treatment.
Medical-grade chemical peels
Meline Royal Peel is formulated for pigmentation specifically. A peel programme accelerates turnover of pigmented cells, but depth and product are chosen against your skin type to avoid triggering rebound pigment.
Mesotherapy
Delivers brightening and antioxidant actives into the skin to support an overall programme rather than acting as a standalone fix.
Rejuran
Does not target pigment directly, but improving skin quality and reducing inflammation supports recovery where post-inflammatory marking is the issue.
What treatment cannot do
- Melasma is managed, not cured — it recurs, and maintenance is part of the plan rather than a sign of failure
- No in-clinic treatment outpaces ongoing unprotected sun exposure
- Aggressive treatment on deeper skin tones can worsen pigmentation rather than improve it
- Results are gradual, over months — a single session is not a solution
- Pigment change with an unusual pattern or sudden onset needs medical assessment before any cosmetic treatment
Frequently asked questions
- Can melasma be cured permanently?
- No. Melasma is a chronic, relapsing condition influenced by hormones, heat and UV. It can be significantly improved and then maintained, but any clinic promising a permanent cure is misrepresenting it.
- Why does my pigmentation keep coming back in Dubai?
- Year-round intense UV, plus heat, which aggravates melasma independently of UV. Without daily broad-spectrum protection and sensible sun behaviour, new pigment forms as fast as treatment clears the old.
- Is laser the best treatment for pigmentation?
- Not automatically, and on mid-to-deeper skin tones it carries a real risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The right treatment depends on the type of pigmentation and your skin type, which is what the assessment establishes.
- Do glutathione injections lighten skin?
- Skin lightening is not an approved indication for glutathione and the evidence for intravenous glutathione as a whitening agent is limited. It should not be presented as a pigmentation treatment, and a clinic marketing it that way is not being straight with you.
- How long does pigmentation treatment take to work?
- Expect months rather than weeks, with gradual improvement across a course. Photographs at baseline are the only reliable way to judge progress, because gradual change is exactly what the eye fails to notice.
