In short
Fat-dissolving injections target small, localised pockets that resist diet and exercise. They are not a weight-loss treatment and are not suitable for generalised fat. Best results come in people near a stable target weight with a discrete, pinchable pocket. Cellulite is a separate structural problem.
What causes it
- Localised fat deposits
- Genetically determined pockets — under the chin, flanks, inner thighs — that persist despite overall weight loss. These are what injectable fat reduction targets.
- Cellulite
- Dimpling caused by fibrous bands tethering skin to deeper tissue, with fat pushing between them. It is structural, occurs across all body types, and is not the same problem as excess fat.
- Skin laxity after weight change
- Loose skin following significant weight loss is not fat and is not improved by fat-reduction treatment.
Who these treatments actually suit
The realistic candidate is someone at or near a stable target weight with a specific, pinchable pocket that has not responded to diet and exercise. In that person, a course of treatment can produce a visible contour change.
They are not a treatment for being overweight, and they are not an alternative to weight management. Used that way they disappoint and cost a great deal.
Where skin laxity is the main issue rather than fat, reducing volume can make loose skin more obvious. That needs saying before treatment, not after.
Cellulite: managing expectations
Cellulite affects the large majority of women regardless of body weight or fitness, and it is a structural problem involving fibrous septae rather than simply excess fat.
Improvement is realistic; elimination is not. Treatment plans should be described in terms of reducing the appearance of dimpling, and any claim of permanent removal should be treated with scepticism.
Treatment options
Which of these is appropriate depends on your assessment. Each links to the full detail for that treatment.
Lemon Bottle
An injectable lipolytic used for small, localised fat pockets in suitable candidates.
Aqualyx
An injectable fat-dissolving option for discrete deposits, delivered as a course.
Cellulite treatment
Targets the structural dimpling of cellulite, which is a different problem from localised fat.
Body filler
For contour irregularities or volume deficits where adding rather than reducing is appropriate.
What treatment cannot do
- Not a weight-loss treatment and not suitable for generalised fat
- Requires a course of sessions with gradual results
- Skin laxity is not improved and may become more noticeable as volume reduces
- Cellulite is improved rather than eliminated
- Results depend on maintaining a stable weight afterwards
Frequently asked questions
- Are fat-dissolving injections a weight-loss treatment?
- No. They target small, localised pockets that resist diet and exercise in people already near a stable target weight. They are not suitable for generalised fat and are not an alternative to weight management.
- Can cellulite be removed permanently?
- No. Cellulite is structural, caused by fibrous bands tethering the skin, and it affects most women regardless of weight. Treatment reduces the appearance of dimpling rather than eliminating it.
- How many sessions are needed?
- Injectable fat reduction is delivered as a course, with results developing gradually between sessions. The number depends on the area and how it responds, and it is reviewed as you go.
- Will my skin be loose afterwards?
- Where laxity already exists, reducing volume beneath it can make it more noticeable. That is assessed beforehand, because it changes whether the treatment is a good idea.
