In short
Jawline filler uses a firmer hyaluronic acid gel along the mandibular border to sharpen definition and improve profile balance. It typically takes 2–4 ml and lasts 12–18 months. It defines an existing jawline — it does not lift significant sagging, which needs surgery.

How jawline definition is actually built
A defined jawline comes from a continuous, unbroken line running from the chin to the angle of the jaw. Ageing and genetics interrupt that line in two places: the chin loses projection, and the pre-jowl area just in front of the jowl hollows out, creating a visible step.
Treatment works by restoring the structural points that carry that line — the jaw angle, the mandibular border, and very often the chin. This is why jawline and chin are usually treated together: a short or recessed chin makes even a well-defined jaw look weak, and treating the jaw alone can look disconnected.
A firmer, higher-projection product is used here than in lips or tear troughs. Soft filler placed along the jaw simply spreads and adds weight without creating an edge.
How much product, and why it is staged
Meaningful jawline definition usually needs 2–4 ml, which is considerably more than most people expect and more than lips or tear troughs require. This is a structural area covering a long distance on both sides.
It is often better to stage this across two appointments a few weeks apart. It lets the first placement settle so the second can be planned against a real result rather than a prediction, and it spreads the cost.
Results last longer here than in mobile areas — typically 12–18 months.
Where filler is the wrong answer
This is the most important section on the page, because jawline is the area where expectations and anatomy most often diverge.
If the underlying problem is loose skin rather than lost structure — a genuine jowl, hanging skin along the jaw, laxity in the neck — filler will not lift it. Adding volume to a face with significant laxity adds weight, and weight makes descent look worse rather than better. The honest answer in that situation is that a surgical option addresses it and injectables do not.
Submental fullness — fat under the chin — is also a separate problem. It is not improved by jawline filler, and it needs a different approach.
A practitioner who agrees to treat significant sagging with filler is selling you something that will not work. Being told no here is useful information.
Risks specific to the jawline
Swelling and bruising are expected for several days, and the area can feel firm or tender while the product integrates.
The facial artery crosses the mandibular border, so this region carries vascular occlusion risk and requires accurate depth and placement. Warning signs — disproportionate pain, blanching, dusky discolouration developing over hours — warrant immediate contact with the clinic.
Overfilling here has a particular failure mode: widening. Product placed too far below the jaw border broadens the lower face instead of sharpening it, which is the opposite of the intended effect and a common reason people dislike their result.
When this is not the right treatment
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Significant skin laxity or an established jowl, where filler cannot lift and may add weight
- Active infection in the treatment area
- Anyone expecting a surgical degree of change from a non-surgical treatment
If filler is not right for you
Masseter slimming
Where the lower face looks wide because of an enlarged masseter muscle rather than lost structure, relaxing the muscle is the appropriate treatment and filler would make it worse.
Sculptra
Where the underlying issue is generalised volume loss and thinning skin rather than a specific contour, gradual collagen stimulation can suit better.
Frequently asked questions
- How much filler is needed for a jawline?
- Typically 2–4 ml, which is more than most people expect. It is a long, structural area treated on both sides, and it is often staged across two appointments so the first placement can settle before the second is planned.
- How long does jawline filler last?
- Usually 12–18 months. It lasts longer than lip filler because the area moves far less.
- Will jawline filler fix a double chin?
- No. Fullness under the chin is a separate problem and is not improved by filler along the jaw. It needs a different approach, which would be discussed at consultation.
- Can jawline filler lift sagging skin?
- No. Where there is genuine laxity or an established jowl, filler cannot reposition tissue and adding volume can make heaviness more obvious. Surgery is the treatment that addresses that, and you should be told so plainly.
- Is chin filler done at the same time?
- Often, yes. The chin and jawline work as a single unit, and a chin that lacks projection makes the whole jawline look weaker. Treating the jaw alone can look disconnected.
- Does jawline filler make your face look wider?
- It can if it is placed poorly. Product positioned below the jaw border broadens the lower face rather than defining it. Accurate placement along the border is what creates an edge instead of width.
