In short
Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid gel to define the lip border, improve shape and add modest volume. Most first treatments use 0.5–1 ml. Results are visible immediately, swelling settles over 2–7 days, and the result typically lasts 6–12 months. It can be dissolved if you are unhappy.

What lip filler actually changes
Lip treatment is less about volume than most people expect. The things that make lips look good — a defined vermilion border, a visible cupid's bow, balanced proportion between upper and lower lip, and support at the corners — are structural. Adding volume without addressing structure is what produces the overfilled look people are trying to avoid.
A well-planned treatment usually does one or two specific things: restores definition that has softened with age, corrects an asymmetry, or adds modest volume where the lip is genuinely thin. Doing all three at once in a first appointment is rarely the right call.
Proportion matters more than size. A lower lip that is slightly fuller than the upper is the usual natural relationship, and reversing it is one of the clearest signs of overtreatment.
How much product you need
Most first treatments use 0.5 ml to 1 ml. Half a millilitre is genuinely enough for definition and a subtle change, and it is often the right starting point even when a patient arrives asking for more.
Product can always be added at a review two weeks later. It cannot be un-injected — dissolving means an additional appointment, an additional enzyme injection, and starting again. Starting conservatively is the safer direction of error, and it costs less.
Lips metabolise filler faster than cheeks or jawline because they move constantly, so expect 6–12 months rather than the 12–18 typical elsewhere.
What recovery really looks like
Lips swell more than anywhere else on the face. The first 24–48 hours can look significantly larger and less even than the final result, and this is normal rather than a sign something has gone wrong. Most of it settles within a week.
Bruising is common. If you have an event, book at least two weeks before it, not two days.
Small lumps are usual in the first days as the product integrates and are usually gone by two weeks. Judge the result at two weeks — a great deal of unnecessary worry, and unnecessary dissolving, happens in the first few days.
Risks specific to lips
Beyond the usual swelling and bruising, two things matter here.
If you get cold sores, lip filler can trigger an outbreak, because needling the area reactivates dormant herpes simplex virus. Tell your practitioner at consultation — antiviral cover can be arranged in advance. Treatment is postponed if a cold sore is active.
Vascular occlusion — filler entering or compressing an artery — is uncommon but is the serious risk. The labial arteries run through the lip, so this is a region that demands proper technique and a practitioner who can recognise and treat an occlusion. Warning signs are disproportionate pain, blanching, or dusky mottled discolouration developing over hours. Any of these means contacting the clinic immediately rather than waiting to see if it settles.
When this is not the right treatment
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- An active cold sore or skin infection on or around the lips
- A history of significant reaction to hyaluronic acid filler
- Anyone seeking a result that would put the lips out of proportion with the rest of the face

Frequently asked questions
- How much do lip fillers cost in Dubai?
- Filler is priced per syringe or millilitre and the published rates are on the prices page. Most first lip treatments use 0.5–1 ml, so the cost depends on how much your assessment shows you need. The figure is confirmed at consultation before treatment.
- How long do lip fillers last?
- Typically 6–12 months. Lips metabolise filler faster than cheeks or jawline because they are constantly moving, so they need refreshing sooner than other areas.
- How long does lip filler swelling last?
- Swelling is marked for the first 24–48 hours and settles over two to seven days. The final result should be judged at two weeks, not in the first few days.
- Do lip fillers hurt?
- Numbing cream is applied first and most fillers contain local anaesthetic. Lips are the most sensitive area treated, so expect pressure and some discomfort rather than sharp pain.
- Can lip filler be dissolved?
- Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler is broken down with hyaluronidase. This is used both to correct a result you are unhappy with and as emergency treatment if a vascular occlusion occurs.
- Will 0.5 ml make a visible difference?
- Yes, particularly for definition. Half a millilitre placed well produces a noticeable but natural change, and it is a sensible starting point. More can be added at a two-week review.
- Can I have lip filler if I get cold sores?
- Usually yes, but tell the clinic beforehand. Injecting the lip can reactivate the virus, so antiviral cover is arranged in advance. Treatment is postponed if a cold sore is currently active.
